Cobiana Communications & Culture is a non-profit organization founded and registered in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa.  We focus on and believe in the power of culture and communication to drive social and economic transformation.  Cobiana Communications & Culture grew out of Cobiana Records, a record label that transmits the cultures, dignity and identity of Bissau-Guineans.  Cobiana represents some of Bissau’s most cherished musical heroes, who have proven that one well-placed act of communication can change everything.

Cobiana seeks to act on and refine some main development hypotheses through our work:

• Access to sub-regional and global markets is critical for the culture industries as well as for other economic sectors.
• Culture is an indispensable component of social and economic development, and culture industries have the potential to drive these transformations.
• The digital media revolution is creating and will continue to create opportunities to move under-represented artists and national cultural industries up the value chain.
• We can unite these powerful forces to effect social and economic transformations.
